What You Should Look for in a Contractor
Finding the right contractor for a job can be a daunting task. Before you can even start talking about the project itself, there are a few questions you should ask immediately before signing on with a contractor.
Are They Licensed and Insured?
Hiring an unlicensed contractor is never worth the gamble. Make sure any contractor you’re looking to work with is fully licensed and insured so as to avoid any legal or financial disasters later on.
What is their Safety Reputation?
Safety is always number one when it comes to construction. A reputable contractor will provide OSHA safety training for their crews. Also, be sure to check the Experience Modification Rates (EMR) to help measure the contractor’s priorities when it comes to safety.
What is their Communication Process?
You want to assume your contractor is completing the job to your satisfaction, but you shouldn’t have to assume. You should know what they are doing and how they are doing it. You should have more communication with the contractor beyond just billing. A good contractor will communicate with you every step of the way. Consistent communication prevents you from wondering how the job is going and when the job will be completed.
What is the daily clean-up process?
A professional contractor will have a process that involves keeping a clean workspace. This includes daily cleanup during the entirety of the job. Also, be sure to get a clear idea of how the contractor plans on keeping the job site as clean as possible:
- Will they be using a tarp to cover surfaces or furniture?
- Will the crew use shoe coverings in or around the job site?
- Are there items that need to be temporarily moved away from the job site?
Is There a Warranty?
A reputable contractor will provide you with some form of a warranty or guarantee on their work. However, you should also ask for a copy of the manufacturer’s warranty on any material used during the job.
